Ageing in Northern Rural Alberta

In 2009, Northern Sunrise County (NSC) undertook a review exercise to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the municipality in dealing with an ageing population. On November 25, 2009, NSC hosted a workshop at the Domaine des Aines (Seniors Complex) in St. Isidore AB. Facilitated by two researchers from the University of Alberta, Norah Keating and Jacquie Eales, the 30 participants explored the question, “Are rural communities good places to grow old?“.

Phase II

The second phase of this project has five main objectives:

1. Validate the findings of the workshop;
2. Explore and prioritize recommendations made in the report;
3. Evaluate the financial and societal impacts of implementing these recommendations;
4. Evaluate the financial and societal impacts of a status quo;
5. Provide a recommendation to Councils on services and infrastructure requirements for future planning purposes.

Demographics are rapidly changing and the particular challenges arising from this for rural municipalities should be identified and properly planned for. The Government of Alberta has taken the first steps to providing options for seniors to remain within their communities through their strategic direction of Aging in the Right Place. While allowing seniors to remain close their families, this shift in service delivery will impact the involvement of local governments.
